Learning at Kurrajong Kids

Play is where learning begins.

At Kurrajong Kids, play-based learning is the foundation of our educational approach.

We recognise play as meaningful, purposeful and intentional. Through play, children explore, investigate, imagine, communicate, problem-solve, develop relationships, take risks, make choices and make sense of the world around them.

Our educators aren’t simply watching children play. They are active participants in children’s learning – observing, engaging, questioning, wondering, researching alongside children and intentionally extending their ideas and thinking.

From this foundation of play-based learning, five interconnected branches influence learning at Kurrajong Kids.

Our Five

Learning Foundations

Relationshops & Belonging

Strong, nurturing relationships help children feel safe, valued and connected, giving them the confidence to explore, learn and grow.

Inquiry

We encourage curiosity, questions and discovery, giving children opportunities to investigate, experiment and explore new ideas.

Agency & Independence

We empower children to make choices, share ideas and develop confidence in their own abilities, recognising every child's voice.

Intentionality

Our educators thoughtfully plan environments, experiences and interactions that nurture curiosity, extend learning and support each child's development.

Nature & Community

Through meaningful connections with nature, Country and our local community, children develop a sense of belonging, responsibility and respect for the world around them.

Learning that Grows with Our Children

Every child’s learning journey is unique, shaped by their strengths, interests and experiences, and nurtured through meaningful relationships, purposeful play and a responsive approach that grows alongside them.

More Ways to Learn & Grow

At Kurrajong Kids, learning happens in many different ways. Alongside the everyday play, relationships and experiences within our rooms, children will have opportunities to move their bodies, make music, grow food, explore nature and connect with the world around them. These experiences are not separate from children's learning. They are another way for children to discover what they enjoy, develop new skills, build confidence and make meaningful connections

Strong bodies, Growing confidence. Plenty of Fun

Move and Thrive

Our physical movement program gives children regular opportunities to move, challenge themselves and discover what their bodies can do. Through fun, age-appropriate movement experiences, children can develop balance, coordination, strength and body awareness while building confidence and a positive relationship with physical activity. For us, it's not about being the fastest or the best - it's about children experiencing the joy of movement and feeling proud of what their bodies can do.

Listen. Move, Create

Music & Rhythm

Music has a special way of bringing children together. Our music program gives children opportunities to explore songs, rhythm, instruments, sound and movement in ways that are playful, engaging and appropriate to their age. From our youngest babies responding to rhythm and familiar songs through to older children experimenting with instruments, movement and musical ideas, music provides another wonderful language through which children can communicate, create & express themselves.

From tiny seeds, wonderful things can grow.

Grow, Harvest & Taste

Our Kitchen Garden will give children the opportunity to get their hands into soil and be involved in growing herbs, vegetables and seasonal produce. Children can help plant seeds and care for the garden, watch things grow and eventually harvest what they have helped nurture. This simple, real-life experience create opportunities for children to learning about nature, food, responsibility, patience and sustainability – while experiencing the excitement of discovering that something they planted can end up on their plate.

Growing, creating and discovering food together.

Little Cooks

Food provides so many opportunities for learning. Through age-appropriate cooking and food experience, children may have opportunities to measure, pour, mix, prepare and taste different foods, including produce gown in our own kitchen garden. Along the way there are opportunities for conversations about healthy food, culture, where ingredients come from and how food brings people and communities together. And of course, there is something pretty special about eating something you’ve helped gron and make yourself.

Caring for the place where we learn, play and belong. .

Nature & Sustainability

We want children to develop a genuine relationship with the natural world around them. Gardening, compositing recycling, caring for the plants, exploring natural materials and noticing changes in our environment can all become part of everyday life at Kurrajong Kids. Rather than sustainability being something children are simply told about, we want them to experience what it means to care for their environments and understand that even small actions can make a difference.

Our community is part of our classroom.

Connected to Our Community

Children belong to something much bigger than the room they spend their day in. We want to build genuine connections with our local community and create opportunities for children to learn from the people, places and experiences around them. Depending on children's interests and opportunities within our community, this may include local visitors, excursions, community projects and connections with libraries, schools, services and other community organisations. These experiences help children develop a sense of belonging and begin to understand their own place within their community.

There are so many ways to learn, grow and shine.

Learning Beyond the Everyday

At Kurrajong Kids, these experiences aren't about filling children's days with scheduled activities. They are about opening up possibilities. A song can spark a new interest. A seed can lead to weeks of wondering and discovery. A physical challenge can become a moment of enormous pride. A visit from someone in our community can inspire a hundred questions. We want children to have time to explore those moments, follow their curiosity and see where their learning takes them.

Where little moments lead to big discoveries

We believe the most meaningful learning happens when children feel safe, valued and free to explore.
Through genuine relationships, purposeful play and everyday discoveries, we nurture confident, curious and capable little learners.
